Carneddau Ridge

Starting at the Capel Curig end of Llyn Ogwen we climb up to Pen yr Ole Wen then across the Carneddau ridge to Carnedd Llewelyn. The walk continues over Pen yr Helgi Du – this section is exposed and a good head for heights required. The return is down Braich to the Leete. The walk involves a total ascent of about 3,000 feet.

Starting by Llandegla cross-roads, by the pub car park, the morning 4.5 mile walk involves 300 m of ascent to reach the top of the Horseshoe Pass, where we can have lunch (of your choice). The afternoon is mostly downhill, across green fields, approx 3 miles back to the car park.

Llyn y Parc

Starting from the Bridge Car Park in Llanrwst the walk follows good forest tracks, trails and roads. Except for a short, not very steep climb shortly after the start this walk is largely level. After visiting the lake the route goes through the mining area of Nant Bwlch yr Haearn to the little church at Llanrhychwyn. From here we return to the start.

Offa’s Dyke and Garreg

Starting from the layby on the minor road from Whitford to the A5026 and A55 at Penfforddllan this is a walk of about 5 miles. It will visit and walk alongside the actual Offa’s Dyke. We then go across fields to Garreg Wood and the Pharos. The return is through the tiny hamlet of Garreg. Given decent weather the views from this walk can be spectacular.

Tryfan and the Glyders

We meet at the first layby on the left after reaching Llyn Ogwen from Capel Curig. The route follows the steep and rocky North ridge to reach the summit of Tryfan. After a brief descent, Bristly Ridge is another rocky and scrambly ascent (alternative is to go up the scree) taking us to the Glyders. We traverse the Glyders before descending steeply past the Devil’s Kitchen and returning past Llyn Idwal. Total ascent 3100 ft.

Llanarmon D C and the Upper Ceiriog Trail

Commencing with steep ascent along a green lane the walk leaves the village of Llanarmon D C to explore the relatively unspoiled Ceiriog Valley. After the initial climb the route descends to Rhyd Caledwynt and then crosses the River Teirw to Pandy. We pass Pont y Meibion, home to the 17th century poet Huw Morus (known as Eos Ceiriog), on the return to the start.

Conwy Afon Gyrach

Starting from the car park at Crow’s Nest we head west on a steady climb up above Capelulo, following part of the North Wales path to Bryn Derwydd and onto Cefn Coch. We head towards Tal y Fan and turn towards Cefn Maen Amor following one of the many paths back to the start point. The walk is relatively easy over undulating ground with only one stile.

Starting from the village of Eryrys near Mold (accessible from the Llanarmon Road). Our route goes across fields into Nercwys Forest and follows part of a Rural Flintshire Walk. We then go across farmland to the limestone escarpment at Bryn Alyn. This is a wonderful viewpoint overlooking the Alyn Valley and Moel Fammau.

Cilgwyn & Moel Tryfan

Starting from the car park on the Waunfawr to Rhosgadfan Road. The route crosses open country along largely well defined paths and tracks. The area is renowned for slate quarrying and the route goes through some of these disused workings. The walk combines panoramic view over Yr Wyddfa, Nantlle Ridge, Eifils and Caernarfon Castle. This walk is within the capabilities of most club members.

Moel Sych

Meet at car park by the bridge in Llandrillo. The Walk starts at 154 metres rising to 827m, by a mix of bridleways and, later, less distinct footpaths through heather. Once on the crest, which includes Cadair Bronwen, Cadair Berwen and Moel Sych, there are great views on a fine day. It can be boggy on top, despite the name of the mountain. This circular walk ends with a mile of tarmac.

Parking (carefully) in Maeshafn. We immediately ascend Moel Findeg to enjoy panoramic views. Descending to Bryn Gwyn Farm, we continue down a steep path to the A494 at Gwernymyndd. From here via Colomendy to the Druid Llanferres for lunch. The afternoon walk back to Maeshafn is about 2.5 miles and includes one short steepish climb.

Snowdon from Nant Gwynant

The walk starts from the Pont Bethania Car Park in Nant Gwynant. We follow the Watkin Path to the summit of Snowdon. The return is along the South Ridge to Bwlch Cwm Llan and then back down to the lower part of the Watkin Path. The walk is about 6 miles long and involves about 3,800 feet of climbing. The Watkin Path is a well established route to the summit. The South Ridge involves a little exposure when vertigo is a possibility.
(The earlier start from the Travellers is because this small car park quickly fills up.)

Starting from the Bochlwyd Car park (first free car park east of Ogwen Cottage), this walk visits the three lakes on the north side of the valley and ascends to Llyn Idwal and then climbs the Devil's Kitchen to reach Y Garn. Total height climbed 3000 feet. We then descend to visit Cwm Clyd and thence down to Llyn Idwal before climbing to Llyn Bochlwyd.

Starting from Jumbles Reservoir car park we follow a series of reservoirs north in the West Pennine moorland, passing through the delightful Pennine stone villages of Edgeworth and Entwistle and past the Strawberry Duck pub with its own railway station. From here we ascend the Pennine Moors following the Weavers way before returning to Jumbles. (Tea may be available at Last Drop village.) Park on the road near the high school just north of the canal. We initially climb towards Castell Dinas Bran before turning east through pleasant countryside to Llandyn Hall, Bryn Melin and the Sun Trevor inn. A short section through woods takes us on to the Panorama walk above the valley. We complete the walk by climbing to the Castell and descending to the start. (Packed lunch required.)

Pentrefoelas

The walk starts at the village car park. and follows the new proposed village circular path. The route follows an ancient track to cross the A5 and then through part of the Foelas Estate and visits the Celtic Fort from which the village takes its name. The walk also then joins the Hiraethog Trail before crossing the A5 at Ceiriog. We return via Parc and Gilar. This is a walk in a beautiful area much neglected by walkers who usually only stop in the village to visit the toilet.

Starting from the car park at Minera lead mine the walk follows the disused railway track through the country park and quarry onto open farm land. From here we climb steadily up onto the open moorland of Minera mountain before descending to Nant Mill. From here the route follows a section of the Clywedog trail back to the start. A varied walk with a total ascent of about 800 ft. Visiting industrial archaeological sites, open moorland and wooded valleys.

Moel Fammau and Llys y Coed Roundabout

Starting from the View Point Car Park in Cilcain our route takes to the Pumping Station. We then follow the bridleway to the remains of the World War II Searchlight Battery. We climb the lower slopes of Moel Fammau and then pick up the permissive bridleway around the mountain to head for Bwlch Penbarras. Offa’s Dyke Path is followed to and over the summits of Moel Fammau and Moel Dywyll before contouring around the Vale of Clwyd side of Moel Llys y Coed. The return is along the old Drovers Road through Pedair Groesffordd.

Starting from Garth Mill the walk goes along the bridleway towards Mostyn Hall and then to Tre Mostyn. From here we pass Pentre Ffynnon Hall en route to Trelogan. We then go through the hamlet of Axton and down to the Red Lion Llanasa for lunch. In the afternoon we return via the Pet Rescue, Trelogan mines and the Steps to Heaven back to the start. The morning walk is about 5 and the return about 3 miles.

Starting from the Cattle Grid at the Waen Rhesycae this walk takes us via Pwll Melyn towards Ysceifiog. We then cross over to Calcoed Hall and then onto Brynford Common which we cross for lunch at the Glanyrafon Inn. Following lunch we return to the Common and walk over towards Halkyn before returning to the start. The morning walk is about 5 and the return about 3 miles.

The walk is entirely to the south of the town and includes about 1700 ft of climbing, and follows good tracks to a col which affords the potential for excellent views of the surrounding area. It continues crossing rough moorland to Y Ro-wen, and then descending steeply into the valley and into the forest to join Sarn Helen, the Roman road from Caernarfon to Carmarthen, to return to the start.

At 9.30am prompt, by the Royal Hotel in Llangollen, we catch the X94 bus to Cynwyd. This is a linear walk following the North Berwyn Way from Cynwyd to Llangollen. The walk starts by following the lane alongside the Afon Trysor. We then pick up a path to Bwlch Cynwyd before the final short climb to the summit of Moel Fferna at 2060 ft, (628 metres) the highest point of the walk. The views from here can be extensive ranging from the Coast at Prestatyn across Snowdonia and along the Dee Valley. We then follow the ridge over Vivod Mountain to Llangollen. The walk after the initial ascent, is largely level with a long descent.

Arran Fawddwy

Go north-east out of Dinas Mawddwy, towards Cwm Cywarch, crossing Afon Cywarch to take the road on the eastern side of the river (no road number given on the map). Park at the end of the tarmac in Cwm Cywarch.
From Cwm Cywarch 5 km (including 2 km of steep ascent) takes us to Aran Fawddwy. From the top we look east towards Lake Vyrnwy, south over the Dovey valley and west over Brithdir towards Dolgellau. We turn west on a long upland section past Creigiau Camddwr on our left and back down the Cywarch valley towards the starting point., with a possibly boggy passage on the top.

Nantlle Ridge

The taxi takes us from the Car Park at Talysarn to Rhyd Ddu. The walk then goes over one of the best ridge walks in the British Isles. The walk is about 10 miles long and involves 3 steep climbs and some scrambling with a total ascent of about 3,500 feet. A good head for heights is required for this walk and 2 of the descents are steep and slippery.

The Carneddau Challenge

This linear walk begins at the east end of Llyn Ogwen and ascends to Carnedd Dafydd and Carnedd Llywelyn via Pen yr Ole Wen. It then goes over Foel Grach, Garnedd Uchaf, Foel Fras (all 6 peaks >3000 feet) and on to Drum. Turning eastwards, we reach the final 2 peaks (Foel Lwyd and Tal y Fan) – mere undulations compared with what’s gone before – and then continue down to Conwy.

This walk begins with an easy path that rises gently to Llyn y Foel and then we climb more steeply up a rocky ridge to the summit of Moel Siabod. The return route descends towards Llynnau Mymbyr with the final part following alongside the river.  2500 feet of ascent.

Garn Prys

This is the hill that forms the backdrop to the village of Pentrefoelas when approached from the Denbigh direction. The walk starts along footpaths from the village and then crosses Open Access Land to the summit of Garn Prys. From here we follow the Community boundary to Bryngwyn and then paths and tracks to Pont Newydd. The return is via Hen Foelas.

St Elmo’s Summer House

Starting from the Railway Station at Prestatyn this walk takes us across the Golf Course to Gronant. We then walk through the village and up to the ruins of St Elmo’s Summer House. After a pub lunch in Gwaenysgor we pick up the Offa’s Dyke Path to Graig Fawr and then join the North Wales Path to the start.

Roman Road and Standing Stone

The walk starts from the car park in the pretty village of Rowen situated just above the Conwy valley. A lane takes us to Rhiw where we pick up a Roman Road up to Maen-y-Bardd (the Poet's stone) and beyond to Cae Coch. We then follow mountain tracks up towards the crags on the slopes of Tal y Fan. After circling Craig Celynin, the track leads down to Garnedd-Wen and Llangelynin Old Church. From here we take a Drover's Road through woods and return to Rowen.

Llanarmon and Eryrys

This is a pleasant stroll with one moderate but short climb. Views across the valley to Moel Fammau and the Clwydian range are excellent. Starting in Llanarmon, we cross the B5430 before skirting the quarry and climbing to arrive at a limestone pavement, lime kiln and radio mast above Llanferres. From here we travel east to Eryrys, where old mine workings are much in evidence, before returning down quiet lanes to Llanarmon.

Carnedd Llywelyn - Scramble

This walk starts at the A5 between the east end of Llyn Ogwen and the access road for Ffynnon Llugwy where there is limited parking.* The route takes us to Ffynnon Llugwy reservoir via cwm Llugwy giving us great views of the peaks we will be crossing later. This walk involves two scrambles and a narrow knife edge section so a good head for heights is required. Total ascent about 3000 ft.
*To take minimum cars meet in the first layby on the left after reaching Llyn Ogwen from Capel Curig.

Inland from Abergele

Starting from Water Lane car park, Abergele we walk along mainly easy footpaths to Moelfre Isaf and explore some of the surprising countryside including a watchtower, south of Abergele.
