Car Sharing - Caerwys Turn Off

Car Parking is again not available on the waste land at the Travellers Rest. For this programme we are using the link road at Junction 29 - the Rhuallt turn-off. It is more convenient for us after the walk.

Christleton

Starting from The Green in Christleton, this walk follows good paths along fields and a towpath. Pipeworks, previously encountered on this route, should not cause a detour this year.

Starting from the Cross Roads at Brynford we follow the broad Halkyn Mountain Ridge to Moel y Gaer. The return is via Moel Ffagnallt, and Pwll Melyn.

Bells, Castle & Buffalo

A relaxing Boxing Day ramble, starting from the Blue Bell in Halkyn. Following footpaths on the lower slopes of Halkyn Mountain we return to the pub where the traditional chip-butty lunch will be available.

Moel Llys-y-Coed and Moel Dywyll

From the Moel Arthur car park we immediately ascend the Offa’s Dyke path to Meol Llys-y-Coed. The rest of the walk uses old drover’s roads and excellent footpaths. We will visit two minor tops on the main Clwydian ridge and also Moel Famau returning to the start via Cilcain.

Offa’s Dyke & North Wales Path

Our first walk of the New Year starts from a small car park* on Prestatyn Hillside. From the Car Park we follow the Offa’s Dyke Path to Cwm. We then follow paths to Dyserth and return via the North Wales Path along a disused railway line. The walk uses good paths and does have some short fairly steep climbs. *To minimise the number of cars please park at the Nova Car Park and share cars to the start

A figure of eight ramble starting from the White Horse in Cilcain. The network of footpaths in this area allows further exploration of nooks and crannies, heights and depths.

Llanferres, Maeshafn & Loggerheads

From the Lay-by on the A494 we walk through the woods to Maeshafn and on to Loggerheads. We then follow the leete path to Cilcain walking along the other side of the valley back to Llanferres.

Llwytmor and Foel Fras

Starting from the Car Park in Abergwyngregin we walk up the valley to the forest. Following forest tracks up on to Llwytmor Bach, we have a short climb to the broad ridge over Llwytmor to Foel Fras on the Carneddau Ridge. The return is via Drum and Dyffryn Anafon. The route is mostly along good forest tracks but some of it is across rough open country.

In Search of a Hill Fort

Starting from the Red Lion car park in Rhosesmor this is a varied walk that follows paths and tracks across pasture and through woodland eventually leading onto the open area of Halkyn Mountain. The return will include the option to walk over or around Moel y Gaer.

Snowdrop Walk

Starting from the top car park at Shire Hall, we make our way to Gwysaney Hall, where there are fine views. We descend to Mynachlog, and cross over a section of Wat’s Dyke into The Green at Northop. We return over the Golf Course and an ancient bridleway alongside Soughton Hall, into Sychdyn.

Y Ddau Fwlch

We meet at the Car Park on the lake at Llanberis*. The walk starts from Pont Bethania Car Park* in Nant Gwynant and goes through two passes on the shoulders of Snowdon. First we follow the Watkin Path to Cwm Llan (before the Gladstone Stone) and then through Bwlch Cwm Llan towards Rhyd Ddu. We then climb up to Bwlch Maesgwm before descending to Llanberis.

Wednesday 4th February

Penyball & Llwyn Ifor

The walk starts from the Greenfield Heritage Park, Visitor Centre and follows the old railway line to Holywell. After crossing through the town we climb up to Pen y Bryn and the Pet’s Cemetery. We then cross over Pen y Ball to Grange Quarries taking footpaths through Carmel Woods to the Halfway House for a pub lunch. In the afternoon we go across the fields to Llwyn Ifor and take the bridleway to the Hen Dafarn and then follow the Coast Path back to Greenfield.
Morning walk is about 5 miles and the afternoon about 3.5

Aber Falls and Moel Wnion

Starting from the bottom car park just past the Aber Falls Hotel in Abergwyngregyn the walk takes us up to the waterfall. It continues crossing below the waterfall to meet the North Wales Path, climbing to skirt Moel Wnion then descending the hill to return to the start.

Pen Llithrig y Wrach

A walk over the two south-eastern outliers of the Carneddau. Starting from the car park situated behind the shops in Capel Curig this route offers a fine short section of ridge walking with superb views of the Glyderau and Carneddau in clear conditions.

Parkgate and the Wirral Way

Starting from the Old Baths car park North Parade, this gentle walk takes us along the old sea wall giving fine views across the Dee Estuary towards the hills of Wales. The route goes inland crossing the golf course to follow a disused railway line and bridlepath onto the Wirral Way. We return along Parkgate’s Parade where lunch can be arranged.

Moel Gasyth

The walk starts from the large lay by just outside Denbigh on the Bylchau and Pentrefoelas Road A543 on the outskirts of Denbigh. It goes via paths, tracks and lanes to this hill near Nantglyn which overlooks Denbigh giving great views on a clear day. The route crosses fields and goes through woodlands and visits the site of Dr Johnson’s Cottage.

Mynydd Mawr from Rhyd Ddu

From the car park at Rhyd Ddu we walk to the summit of Mynydd Mawr initially through a pine forest and then a grassy ridge via Foel Rudd. The descent is down pathless heather slopes to Llyn Cwellyn and returns along a forest track.

Around Trelawnyd

A pleasant walk starting from the village Car Park following the Clwydian Way from Trelawnyd through fields and a wood to join a lane where we head north west. We then walk along a bridlepath which drops down to a stream, then climbs up to the edge of the village. An ascent of the Gop is an optional extra if time permits - before or after lunch. Subject to demand a pub lunch could be available at the Crown Inn

Druid's Circle and Jubilee Walk

This walk offers panoramic sea and mountain views. Park by the side of the road at Capelulo. An initial climb up Fairy Glen circles south of Foel Lus. The path continues westward to the stone circles above Penmaenmawr. The return initially drops down to Penmaenmawr before climbing to the Jubilee Walk.

Starting from the Coed y Felin Nature Reserve at Hendre this walk takes us via Lygan Uchaf to Moel y Gaer at Rhosesmor. From here we follow paths and lanes to Rhydymwyn for a pub lunch. The return is via Hesp Alyn and Cefn. About 5 miles before lunch and 3 afterwards.

Llanrwst to Tal y Cafn

For this linear walk we take a bus from Tal y Cafn to Llanrwst and walk back above the Conwy valley. This walk takes in Cadair Ifan Goich, Llyn Siberi and offers impressive views of Snowdonia.

Clwydian Explorer

Starting from the lay by in Llangwyfan the walk takes us up on to Penycloddiau to follow the Offa’s Dyke Path over Moel Arthur and Moel Llys y Coed to Moel Famau. We then take a path down the Vale of Clwyd side of the Range to contour round back to the start. There are three short steep climbs.

Waun y Llyn

Starting from the village of Llanfynydd this walk takes us towards Hope Mountain. Following a lane to Waun y Llyn Country Park we walk across this open country down to the village of Coed Talon. We return to Llanfynydd along the disused railway line now converted into a bridleway. There is an optional pub lunch at the end of this walk.

Sunday 19th April

Horseshoe Pass

The ascents on this walk are gentle and the route does not take in any of the summits in the area but contours round them. The walk at first explores the area around the Horseshoe Pass with excellent views of the Eglwyseg escarpment and the Vale of Llangollen. After visiting some quarries the route takes us over Llantisilio Mountain with (weather permitting) good panoramic views of Snowdonia. From here we join our return path along the lower slopes of Llantisilio Mountain.  Parking across the road from the Ponderosa.

Cwm Eigiau

We park at the end of the road out of Tal-y-Bont that leads towards Llyn Eigiau. The route takes us along the side of the lake and then up to Carnedd Llywelyn. Returning from the summit, we follow the ridge towards Foel Grach before descending to pass between Llyn Dulyn and Melynllyn and back to the start.

Dyserth Explorer

We meet at the Waterfall in Dyserth village. The choice for our first evening walk will depend on climatic conditions prevailing on the day. The leader has explored a variety of routes, which may include the limestone crags, superb coastal views, an old rail track, and ancient woodland.

Ladybrook Valley

Leaving our cars at Abney Hall, Cheadle, we take a taxi* to Lyme Park to the start a linear waterside trail. The source of this ‘fickle’ brook is the moorland of the Peak District, where it is called Bollinhurst Brook. Its name changes to Norbury Brook, Lady Brook and Micker Brook along the section we follow. Along the way we will catch glimpses of Poynton Lake, Macclesfield Canal, Bramall Hall and Abney Hall.  *transport must be confirmed please ring the leader before 17th April

Pantymwyn & Gwernaffield

Starting from the Crown Inn Pantymwyn, we explore the quiet lanes and footpaths in an area that give us extensive views of the Clwydian Hills and surrounding countryside. The morning walk, of 4.5 miles, will take us over Devil’s Bridge. The afternoon walk of about 3.5 miles, takes us towards Cadole, giving us views over the Dee Estuary.

The Llyn Cwmstradllyn Horseshoe

This walk has a gentle start by the lake and then the route climbs to Moel-ddu. After a short descent, it’s up to Bryn Banog and on to the summit of Moel Hebog. From here the return route follows an easy descent down the ridge and back towards the lake.

This evening walk commences from the Tinkersdale car park in the historic village of Hawarden. The route passes through the village, crosses the golf course and climbs past Oaks Farm to Dobshill. The walk continues into the Warren passing Cherry Orchard Farm returning to Tinkersdale and Hawarden Park the estate of the famous Gladstone family.

Glyder Fawr to Foel Goch

Starting from the Car Park at Llyn Ogwen, we walk up to Llyn Bochlwyd and then ascend the steep ridge of Y Gribin and across to Glyder Fawr. The route then descends to Llyn y Cwn and up to Y Garn and along to the summit of Foel-goch. The path then goes down past Llyn Idwal back to the start.
