Car Sharing A55, Caerwys Turn Off:

This meeting place is no longer available, it has been ‘sealed off’. For walks going towards ‘the coast/Conwy/Snowdonia etc’ meet at Junction 29. This is after the Traveller’s Inn, at the top of the old Rhuallt Hill. There is plenty of parking space if you turn left into a quiet lane, it is also easy to return to afterwards. Please contact walk leader for further details.

The Snowdon Horseshoe

Meet at the Nant Peris Park and Ride and take the bus up to Pen-y-Pass. Walk along the steep ridges of Crib Goch and Crib y Ddysgl and then on to the summit of Snowdon. Take the Watkin path part of the way and then on to Lliwedd and descend to Llyn Llydaw and then back to Pen-y-Pass.

Ro Wen

Starting from the War Memorial in Dolwyddelan this walk takes us up the beautiful Penamnen Valley to the summit of the mountain which dominates it to the east. The views of Snowdonia from Ro Wen are magnificent and the walk concludes with an easy walk down a well-made track to the picturesque village of Dolwyddelan.

Tryfan and Bristly Ridge

We meet at the first layby on the left after reaching Llyn Ogwen from Capel Curig. The route follows the steep and rocky North Ridge to reach the summit of Tryfan. After a brief descent, Bristly Ridge is another rocky and scrambly ascent (alternative is to go up the scree) taking us to the Glyders. We traverse the Glyders before descending steeply past the Devil’s Kitchen and returning past Llyn Idwal.

Sunday 27th September

The Cob

This walk starts from Holywell Leisure Centre and takes us down the Greenfield Valley to Bryn Celyn. We then walk to Stokyn Hall, over Afon Siandwr, and cross over the railway line on to the banks of the River Dee. We then follow the newly upgraded Coast Path to Greenfield Dock. The return to Holywell is via Greenfield Valley where refreshments may be available.

Moel Wnion & Llanllechid Common

Starting in Bethesda, from the main Car Park, the walk takes us over Moel Faban, to the quarry on the side of Gyrn. From here we climb to the broad summit of Moel Wnion. Our route then continues towards Abergwyngregin giving us fine views of waterfalls and the coast. We continue up the Priest’s Path through disused slate quarries, with fine views over Anglesey, back to the start.

A figure of eight ramble starting from the White Horse in Cilcain. A morning walk of about 5 miles, exploring the network of footpaths in this beautiful area. The afternoon route will be about 3 miles giving us a further look at nooks and crannies, heights and depths of the Clwydian hills. Lunch is at the White Horse.

We start this walk at the International Pavilion Car Park and climb to Castell Dinas Bran. We then follow the Offa's Dyke path down to Trefor. From here we go below the aqueduct and turn back to walk along it (this can be avoided by those not keen on heights!). We return to the car park alongside the canal.

Starting from the Car Park near the Aber Falls Hotel we walk up the valley following the ancient road to take the footpath along the Anafon Valley to the pass between Drum and Foel Fras. We return via Llwytmor and Llwytmor Bach to the forest and back to the start.

Starting from the Cywain Centre (Ysgubor Isaf on OS Maps) near Bala this walk goes across the Rhiwlas Estate on to Open Access land. This area, bounded by the Cerrig y Drudion and Corwen to Bala road, is between the Arans, Berwyns and Arenigs. The walk first visits Moel Elmoel and returns via Eglwys Anne, another low summit. Given good weather the views from this walk are extensive and spectacular. The return is along the Afon Tryweryn.

Around Northop

Meet and park at the Red Lion pub in Northop. This walk takes the form of a figure of eight. The larger loop of about 5 miles will be walked before lunch. The morning route follows footpaths and lanes north east of Northop towards Oakenholt and returns to the Red Lion for lunch. After lunch a short walk of about 3 miles takes us across the golf course towards Sychdyn and returns via a section of Wat’s Dyke and The Green.

Llanfynydd and Ffrith

Starting from the car park in Caergwrle this energetic walk will take us over undulating terrain along footpaths and lanes to the highpoint of Pen Llan y Gwr. Weather permitting, we will have extensive views towards Cheshire. The walk continues through the grounds of a former hunting lodge, before returning along a dismantled railway line and Hope Mountain to the start.

Starting from the layby on the A534 at Gallantry Bank, just before the Bickerton Poacher, the walk joins the Sandstone Trail to climb over Bulkeley Hill heading toward Beeston. The walk continues by turning to join part of the Eddisbuy Way passing Burwardsley and going over Bickerton Hill to return to the start.

This half-day walk starts from Graianrhyd, situated on the B5430, between Llanarmon-yn-Ial and Rhydtalog. Parking is possible in the vicinity of the Rose and Crown Inn, just off the B5430, on the right going towards Rhydtalog. We pass Llyn Cyfynwy and Bodidris Hall on this walk.

Starting from a small car park on a lane beyond Rowen, the walk initially takes us to join the Roman Road before turning towards the summit of Drum. The return is via the summit of Garnedd Ddelw before descending along a clear path back to join the Roman Road.

Around Denbigh

Starting from Denbigh Castle we walk towards Afon Ystrad where we follow it past Dr Johnson’s cottage. We continue to Gwaenynog Hall and on to Henllan, returning via Foxhall. Join the leaders for afternoon tea at Castle House, a beautiful Georgian house with panoramic views over the Vale of Clwyd. Please book through Bob, 2 days before the walk.

Blaenau Ffestiniog and Llyn Edno

The walk starts from a car park at the top of the Crimea Pass on the A470. We ascend Allt Fawr (698m) and then walk across to Llyn Edno, where the ground could be wet. We then carry on through Cwm Edno to link up with a track that brings us back towards the car park. A car will be left by the Roman Bridge Railway station to take drivers back to the car park.

Starting from the centre of this ancient historical village, near the Church. Our route follows the border, a battleground during the centuries between Wales and England , along riverside paths, bridleways and byways. Part of this walk goes along the Marcher Way. Around and about Moel Fammau

Starting from the Pumping Station at Cilcain we initially follow the direct route towards the summit. At the Reservoir we leave this route to follow a much gentler ascent. We follow this around the side of the mountain to pick up the permissive bridleway through the Clwyd Forest. There are spectacular views from this high level path. We continue to Bwlch Pen Barras where we pick up the Offa’s Dyke Path for a short distance. We then visit Moel Gaer and walk along a little known path across Access Land to finally reach the summit of Moel Fammau, crossing Access Land to return to the start via Reservoir Valley. (Note this walk is on paths and tracks that are in good condition.)

Penycloddiau

For the last walk of 2009 we park in the lay-by (on the left if coming from the Denbigh direction) on the A541 between Afonwen and Nannerch. This circular walk begins with a long ascent, rewarded by views from the hill-fort of the sea, the Wirral, Moel Arthur, the Vale of Clwyd and Snowdonia, should they be visible. The descent brings us back to farmland paths and tracks, rejoining our outward route just before Trefechan.

Moel Eilio

Our first walk of 2010 takes us to Snowdonia and starts from the car park at the edge of the lake in Llanberis (£4 parking charge).  We walk past the youth hostel up to the ridge and on to the high point of Moel Eilio at 790m/2600ft.  We should get excellent panoramic views, particularly of Yr Wyddfa  to the south.  We return on a bridleway back to Llanberis.

The walk starts from Flint Leisure Centre and follows footpaths across fields towards the Nant.  We then follow Wat’s Dyke Way on to Halkyn Mountain.  After  visiting  the Britannia Inn for lunch the afternoon walk takes us across  the new bridge over the A55 down to the Nant to follow Wat’s Dyke Way in the opposite direction.  We then return to Flint via the Cemetery.

Parking in the village of Maeshafn our morning route of about 5 miles ascends Moel Findeg to enjoy panoramic views. Descending to Bryn Gwyn Farm, we continue down a steep path to the A494 at Gwernymyndd.  From here we continue via Colomendy to the Druid at Llanferres for lunch. The afternoon walk back to Maeshafn is about 2.5 miles and includes one short climb.

Starting from a small lay by on the A534, opposite Coppermine Lane, Bulkeley the walk soon joins the Sandstone Trail to ascend to our highest point at Rawhead.  The absence of foliage should allow extensive views of the central Cheshire Plain.  A small detour will reveal the Queen’s Parlour before returning to the start.

Ruabon Mountain and the Limestone Edges

This walk commences from the base of Trevor Rocks and follows the lanes past Prospect Place onto the moor past the Frozen Clock onto Newtown Mountain. The route then continues over the grouse moor to World’s End.  From here we walk along the top of the limestone escarpment before descending to the start at Trevor Rocks.

Craig Fawr

A circular walk starting from the car park at Craig Fawr in the hamlet of Bryniau, off the A5151.  The morning route of 5 miles goes along the Offa’s Dyke and North Wales Paths.  We stop for lunch at the Eagle and Child, Gwaenysgor. An optional afternoon walk of approximately 3 miles takes us along the Offa’s Dyke Path, south of the car park.

Alyn Valley Explorer

Starting from the viewpoint car park, signposted as you approach Cilcain, we ascend to the ridge on to the Offa’s Dyke Path.  We continue along to Moel Fammau and down to the bottom car park before heading east towards Llanferres, across the A494 through to Big Covert Wood, Maeshafn, Loggerheads, along the Leete back to Cilcain.

Starting from a small car park at Garth Mill we ascend through woodland up to Tre Mostyn, and to Trelogan.  The views over the estuary can be extensive, weather permitting.  We descend ‘The Steps of Heaven’  through Coed y Garth to the start.

Starting from the Pont Bethania Car Park in Nant Gwynant, we walk through varied scenery along the Watkin Path.  After the initial steep ascent, the route joins the course of an old tramway to reach the top total (ascent 2300ft/700m).  We descend to Bwlch Cwm Llan following a clear  track to the start.

Rossendale Way and Irwell Valley Way

Starting from the car park opposite Ramsbottom Railway Station we walk up on to Holcome Moor to Peel Tower, along the moorland paths of the Rossendale Way to Calf Hey Reservoir visitor centre.   We continue on to Helmshore with its historic mill and railway viaduct before returning to Ramsbottom via the Irwell Valley Way.

From the car park in Llandegla village we head to Llyn Gweryd and the Hideaway Café where a morning break can be taken.  We then head back towards Llanarmon and circle back towards the start.  A moderate walk, but energetic with many stiles!

Starting from Greenfield Dock we walk up through the Greenfield Valley and through the Gowdal up  to Penyball.  We then cross over to Pantasaph to a local pub for lunch. The afternoon walk takes us via Llwyn Ifor and Kinsale down to Llannerch y Mor.  We then follow the Coast Path back to the start.

In Search of the Mawddach

A walk in a little known area of the Snowdonia National Park The walk starts at Dolhendre on the Llanuwchllyn to Trawsfynydd Road where there is a small informal lay by.  We first walk through Coed Bryn Bras to the low summit of Craig Llestr. We then cross over two more low summits before walking to the summit of Dduallt.  We retrace our steps  for a short distance then walk alongside Afon Fwy back to the start. Note that this walk can be wet under foot.

Snowdon from Nant Gwynant


Starting from Pont Bethania Car Park in Nant Gwynant, we follow the Watkin Path to the summit of Snowdon.  The return is along the South Ridge to Bwlch Cwm Llan and then back down to the lower part of the Watkin Path.  The walk has some steep sections and a little exposure in places.

The Little Orme and Coed Gaer

A figure of eight walk that takes in the diverse views from the summit of the Little Orme and inland around the village of Penrhynside. This walk should be suitable for most club members, a few short climbs to ascend Rhiewledyn Nature Reserve (SSI) but very few stiles.  On a good day the views are magnificent.  A packed lunch is needed.  

Limited parking just past the bus shelter on Bryn y Bia Road which is just off the B5115 at the top of the short dual carriageway coming up from Penrhyn Bay.

Halkyn Mountain

Our first evening walk of the year will be an old favourite.  It will also be a Ramble. The leader will decide the route as he goes along.  We start from the Blue Bell at Halkyn (please park on the Common) and return before it goes dark! 

The Blue Bell pub is famous for its Cask Beers.

Llangwm

Revisiting an area that Gwilym, our VP, last took us to in Spring 2006.  Llangwm is situated off the A5 between Cerrigydrudion and Corwen, parking over the stone bridge by the church.  We ascend Garnedd Fawr and Foel Goch giving us superb panoramic views.  Part of the route is marked with stones showing the ancient parish boundary with Llandderfel. This walk is within the capabilities of many club members,  Foel Goch is 50m higher than Moel Fammau.

We meet at Plymog lay-by on the A494 Mold to Rhuthun road,  just outside Llanferres to walk the slopes each side of the river Alyn. We cover approximately 5 miles in the morning, have lunch at the Druid Inn, and finish with 3 miles in the afternoon.

A taxi will take us from the Car Park at Talysarn to Rhyd Ddu.  The walk then goes over one of the
best ridge walks in the British Isles.
The walk involves three steep climbs and some scrambling.  A good head for heights is required,
two of the descents are steep and can be slippery.

Around Trelawnyd

Starting from the village Car Park we follow the Clwydian Way through fields towards Graig Arthur, through a wood to join a quiet lane.  We continue on to the recently restored bridle path at Marian Mill up to the edge of the village.  An ascent of Gop Hill is an optional extra if time permits, bring a snack.

Tremeirchion and Bodfari

Starting from the Salusbury Arms this gentle walk takes us towards Bodfari overlooking the wide expanse of the Vale of Clwyd along the lower slopes of the Clwydian Hills.  The return is across farmland of the Vale of Clwyd.  Packed lunch needed.

Cilgwyn and Moel Tryfan

Starting from a car park on the Waunfawr to Rhosgadfan Road.   Our route crosses open country along largely well defined paths and tracks.  The walk combines panoramic views over Yr Wyddfa,  Nantlle Ridge, Yr Eifl and Castell Caernarfon. This walk is within the capability of most club members.
